Understanding How the School Board Works

 

OUR SCHOOL BOARD GOVERNS THE ENTIRE CHARLESTON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

Responsibilities of the School Board: 

  • Hire and manage a Superintendent, who serves as CEO of the School District.
  • Make decisions that impact more than 88 schools and 50,000 students.
  • Approve $950 million annual budget, spending public taxpayer dollars on schools and operations.
  • Ensure federal, state, and district policies are followed.
  • Set policy and priorities for Charleston’s 3rd largest employer.

DID YOU KNOW?

This upcoming election on November 8th 2022, all nine School Board seats will be up at the same time. Each school board member will also be elected to an individual member district that mirrors the local Charleston County Council. For more information on your district, you can visit the following interactive map.

Odd numbered School Board seats will serve four-year terms, and even numbered seats will seat two years and be up for reelection in 2024.

Board members each receive a $800 monthly stipend, and the Chairman of the Board receives a $900 monthly stipend.

These elections are held in November midterm and Presidential general election years. All nine School Board Member seats up for election in 2022.
